Elderberry (Sambucus Nigra) is the dark purple berry of the elder tree, which grows in the warmer parts of Europe, North America, Asia, and Northern Africa.  Traditionally, Native Americans used it to treat infections, while the ancient Egyptians used it to improve their complexions and heal burns. It is still gathered and used in folk medicine across many parts of Europe.

-Elderberry has been used in alternative medicine as a possibly effective aid in reducing the symptoms of influenza (the flu), especially when taken within 48 hours from the onset of symptoms.

-Elderberry fruit contains high levels of flavonoids (compounds found naturally in plants), which means it might have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These help to protect healthy cells from harmful free radicals that play a role in skin problems.

-Elderberries contain high levels of vitamin A. This vitamin A is what gives elderberries the capability to soothe the skin, ease the appearance of age spots, and wrinkles.
