Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) is a low growing North American palm. It grows wildly in the coastal regions of the Carolinas, Florida, the Gulf Coast States, California, and Texas. The part of the plant used in medicine is the berry, which has a nutty vanilla-like flavor. American physicians recognized the usefulness of Saw Palmetto in hormonal regulation as early as 1856. Doctors prescribed teas of whole dried palmetto berries for breast enlargement, muscle building and prostate problems.
-The German Commission E has approved its use for urination problems associated with benign prostate disorders. It has also approved the use of Saw Palmetto Berries for urination problems associated with benign prostatic disease stage I and II. Saw Palmetto also serves as an anti-inflammatory agent.
